TO THE DAWN OF MODERNISM

On the third floor the Wallraf presents its numerous paintings by masters such as Van Gogh, Cézanne, Renoir, Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Signac, Ensor, and Munch. Thanks to the Fondation Corboud, the museum possesses the most extensive collection of Impressionist and Neo-impressionist art in Germany.

Thus visitors can, on their tour, follow French Impressionism from its roots in Barbizon across the cubic forms of Paul Cézanne to the Pointillist masterpieces of Paul Signac. For lovers of German landscape painting, we recommend following the trail from Romanticism, with pictures by Caspar David Friedrich via works by Karl Blechen and Adolf von Menzel to the impressions of Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann.

In its presentation of the painting and sculpture of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Wallraf has brought together the artworks in such a way as to make art history almost tangible.
