FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
Among the most precious objects in the Wallraf’s Department of Drawings and Prints are the ‘Book of Hours of Sophia van Bylant’ (1475) with illuminations by the famous Cologne ‘Master of the St Bartholomew Altarpiece’, along with drawings by numerous artists including Leonardo, Dürer, Bandinelli, Rubens, Rembrandt, Ingres, Rodin, Ensor, Munch, Liebermann and Corinth.
In addition it includes unique medieval miniatures, hand drawings and watercolours. The lion’s share, however, is made up of prints. Apart from this, there are special groups such as sketch-books, portfolios or printed publications which contain original graphic art.
The holdings of Franz Ferdinand Wallraf and the even older collection of the Jesuit Ciollege in Cologne, which can be traced back to the sixteenth century, form the core of the Department of Drawings and Prints at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud.
