THE CREATION OF A MASTERPIECE

As part of the research project Let the Material Talk – Technology of Cologne Panel Painting from the ‘Master of St Veronica’ to Stefan Lochner it was possible to examine the precious panel painting as a prime example of the technology and skills of the Old Cologne Masters. The painting was subjected to elaborate investigation using the latest technologies, including stereomicroscopy, infrared and X-rays.

On the basis of the results obtained, a group of students at the Cologne Institute of Conservation Science at the University of Applied Science in Cologne were able to reconstruct the individual stages in the creation of the masterpiece.

In this short film, the individual steps taken by the Cologne painter 600 years ago are documented in a manner that brings the techniques to life.
