The Moon
Four hundred years after Galileo first turned his telescope to the moon, and forty years after the first man set foot on that celestial body, the Wallraf presents the first ever exhibition dedicated to the earth’s own satellite. “The Moon” will open up a wide panorama of art and cultural history, with around 130 objects showing how people have drawn closer to the Moon, both optically and artistically, over the last five hundred years. The invention of the telescope and of photography, as well as the rise of manned space travel have each ushered in new eras.
The paintings, drawings, prints and photographs that will be shown reflect the great fascination that the moon has exerted on people since time immemorial. The broad array of exhibits ranges from Mediaeval panel paintings to astronomical instruments, Romantic paintings, and even photos of space travel and contemporary art. Among the highlights of the exhibition are original copies of Galilei’s “Sidereal Messenger” (“Sidereus Nuncius“) and Manet’s “Moonlight over Boulogne Harbour” – the first ever Impressionist nocturne.
