This tour takes first-time visitors who have a tight schedule round the main works of the museum: from Lochner, Cranach and Dürer to Rubens, Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Boucher, and on to Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Munch.
For lovers of the 19th century
Starting out from masterpieces by Joseph Anton Koch and Caspar David Friedrich, this tour traces out the major currents in landscape painting. With Courbet, and above all the chief representatives of Impressionism such as Monet, Caillebotte, Sisley and Pissarro, as well as the Pointillist Signac, it looks at the outbreak of Modernism. Give your senses a whirl with this celebration of light and colour!
For lovers of the Baroque
Are you fascinated by great masters like Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dyck? Or do you prefer Rembrandt and Frans Hals? Whether Holland or Flanders, even today the lifestyles in these two art regions, both so rich in tradition, could scarcely be more different! Immerse yourself in the glorious epochs of European painting and discover the various countenances of a culture that took diverging faiths as starting points.
For lovers of mediaeval paintings
The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum has the world’s foremost collection of historical Cologne paintings, which thanks to their exceptional quality command an outstanding position in German mediaeval art. The tour features the highlights from this section.
Barometer of the mood: Light in painting
It governs the mood of every painting: whether through warm candle light, a dramatic use of brightness and darkness, soft dusks or dazzling midday sun: light plays a lead role and it allows us to tell the entire history of painting.
