Starting out from masterpieces by Joseph Anton Koch and Caspar David Friedrich, this tour traces out the major currents in landscape painting. With Courbet, and above all the chief representatives of Impressionism such as Monet, Caillebotte, Sisley and Pissarro, as well as the Pointillist Signac, it looks at the outbreak of Modernism. It governs the mood of every painting: whether through warm candle light, a dramatic use of brightness and darkness, soft dusks or dazzling midday sun: light plays a lead role and it allows us to tell the entire history of painting.
