The representation of sexual violence in this exhibition

The biblical story of Susanna revolves around a subject that unfortunately has a sad reality. A woman is sexually harassed by the looks, words and assaults of men – a fate that according to the estimate by the Bundesfamilienministerium (Ministry of Family Affairs), affects one in three women in Germany at least once in their lives.

Famous artists have tackled the subject. The artistic quality of their work is undisputed. However, the content and interpretation, the representation of the naked Susanna and the Elders’ misuse of power have a particular brisance, not least within the context of the #MeToo movement. Contributions by contemporary artists to the show reflect the relevance of the debate.

We do not wish to play down or historicise the subject, but rather to investigate it from many angles and to discuss it with our audience. Which voice would you give to Susanna and /or the Elders? We invite you to comment and enter a dialogue, e.g. by using the postcards with speech bubbles, which are available in the exhibition. Share these with your friends and acquaintances. Or with us as well, by putting them in the box provided in the foyer. If you would like a response please include your email address.

We are very much aware that the confrontation with the depictions of violence against a woman can disturb and can bring back traumatic memories to victims of sexual violence. For those seeking help the initiative 'Gewalt gegen Frauen' offers a counselling service. Victims, relatives and friends can call 08000 116 016 free of charge at any time, day or night for confidential support in 17 languages.
